Oswalt Pitches Five – Prep for Postseason Begins

Roy Oswalt pitched five innings against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night in preparation for the Postseason. Roy was very good only surrendering one run on two hits.  The Phillies had a chance to win it, a couple of them actually but couldn’t get any more runs across the plate after Raul’s solo homer.

The bullpen was good, especially Antonio Bastardo who struck out the side in the 8th.  The 9th didn’t last long for Jose Contreras served up a monster of a home run to Adam Dunn.  I haven’t seen many homers like that at Nationals Park. Those guys deserved a little excitement like a walk off homer after having to watch us celebrate on their home turf last night.

With a comfortable lead the Phillies were able to rest most of their players for the night and will probably continue to do so, and rotate in all of their bench players that could use a little more time.

This is also a last ditch audition for some of the bench players to make the roster.  As I see it Sweeney and Francisco are in, Valdez is in, and likely is Ross Gload.  Beyond that I’m not too sure. Guys like Greg Dobbs, who went 0-4 with two strikeouts last night, and Domonic Brown I’m unsure of.  Brown looked good after his layoff last night, but it’s hard to say.

“They want to carry the best guys, and rightfully so,” Dobbs said.
“Whether or not I’m a part of that mix, I don’t know. I’m going to go
out there and have fun and do what I’ve always done and play a good game
and if that convinces them either way that I should be on that roster
then so be it.”

Side Notes –

Polly – Polanco will have a cortisone injection this week to try and aid the pain of his sore elbow through October.

The Master at Work

Cole Hamels was absolutely masterful at PETCO Park during the Phillies sweep of the San Diego Padres on Sunday.  It was the Padres fourth loss in a row, and the first time this year they reached a streak that long.  The So-Cal kid was just awesome.  After the second Cole sat down 16 in a row.  He was ready to pitch the ninth, but after 115 pitches his day was done.

The more amazing thing?

The Phillies scored Cole some runs!

Five whole runs of support!  It was pretty great to see and there were reports of Cole actually smiling.  Mike Sweeney clubbed his first homer as a member of the Phillies and his first in the National League.  Sweeney’s dinger put the Phillies up 3-0 and

Hamels struggled to get started through the first two innings, throwing 50 pitches.  After that he was driving with cruise control, pitching eight shutout innings
and lowering his ERA from 3.47  to 3.31. Hamels allowed four hits,
did not walk a batter and struck out six.

This outing for Cole was nothing new.  Cole is having a remarkable season, somewhat of a renaissance of 2008, but probably better.

aug292.jpgRemember that the Phillies just came off a terrible series against the Astros, losing four in a row.  How to explain what the Phillies did to win this series?  Yeah, I don’t really know.  The starting pitchers were absolutely dominate though. Roy Oswalt, Joe Blanton and Hamels combined to allow just two runs in 22 innings, and the Phillies faced their best in Mat Latos and Jon Garland.

Defense was another key to the series win. The Padres, who at the start of the series were the leaders of the National League in fielding percentage, committed 4 errors.  After the Astros series which was a comedy of errors (it’s a saying, I didn’t find it funny) for the Phillies, they looked really good in the field.  Defensively the boys stepped it up, and it made a big difference in the game.

Side Notes -

Braves – Those ******** managed to walk off again against the fish.  Jeez!  You can’t say BAS TARDS! ^^^ Whatever!

Wild Card – The bottom feeders helped the Phillies and gave them a little more of a cushion.  They lead that race by 1 1/2 games.

Halladay – Just hitting his stride Roy Halladay will face the Manny-less Dodgers tonight at 10 p.m.
