Day 2 in Clearwater

14 Feb

presser.jpgAlrighty, so let’s get to the highlights of the second day of Spring
Training in Clearwater.  By now I’m sure you know that the pitchers had a
group press conference at Brighthouse Field to get all the rest of the stupid questions out of the way so they can get down to business.

You would have thought that the reporters throwing out the questions might have come up with some slightly more interesting questions, but we got a whole lot more of the “Cliff what made you choose Philly?” stuff.  The guy that asked about the cheese steaks? Dumb.  Cliff gave a real answer after that.  “I felt like this was the best chance to win world championships. That’s what it’s all about,” Lee said.

What bothers me is all this R2C2, Phantastic Phour stuff.  Was the media so star stuck that they just went stupid?  I’m as psyched about this starting rotation as you are, but don’t forget about Joe Blanton like this one reporter did….

“Cole, you are the only one at this table with a ring….” interrupting Cole says “He’s got one too”  Looking down at Joe.  Big Joe’s immediate response was “It’s okay, I know you always
forget about me.”

Ouch!  Poor Joe.  I haven’t forgotten you Joe.  I still remember jumping around like a crazy person in the stands when you hit that homer in game 3 of the 2008 World Series. I was happy that Cliff, who really seemed to be fielding all the questions, said that they don’t care about all the dumb nicknames that they are focusing on the job ahead of them.

For the most part the guys all seemed to be enjoying themselves.  I think what’s best to take away from this is that they appear to mean business.  Let’s remember that they may appear to be one of the greatest rotations of all time, but they haven’t hit the field yet.  They know that they are something special, but they know that they need to go out there every night and prove.

Oh yeah, and they worked out!  No toeing the rubber just yet, but it was a much less leisurely day then yesterday.

Day 1 in Clearwater (With Pictures!)

13 Feb

in the Lidge t-shirt.  the pitchers were not supposed to throw today
but apparently they were just so excited to get started that a few games
of catch took place before lunch.

Kinda looks to me like Joe Blanton
has lost a little weight.  Hopefully all this talk of the Four Aces
hasn’t brought depression and anorexia.  Seriously though, it’s nice to
see him showing up looking more fit.  There is a little bit of news
regarding Joe.  Rich Dubee told the media today that there isn’t
going to be a competition for the fifth starters spot.  The job is Joe
Blantons.

So what does that news mean to the rest of the pitchers?  This means that Kyle Kendrick is a sure thing for the
bullpen.  Dubee also said that as exciting as the Phillies starting
rotation is not to get too caught up in all the hype because the Phils
need to play 162 games.

While we’re on the subject of the bullpen let’s say a few words about Chad Durbin.  I barked at a fellow blogger to day John Shields from The State of the Phillies because I know he’s sad that Chad wasn’t resigned.  Hopefully he’s still speaking to me…. But let’s be honest.  There are a bunch of arms that need to be tested in our farm system.  We can’t keep this team young, and frankly we can’t afford to keep resigning all these players. Give Justin De Fratus, Scott Mathison, and the boys a chance to impress.

Ruben Amaro Jr. told the media that Antonio Bastardo is a little bit behind because he suffered a minor injury while playing in the Dominican Winter Leagues.

Normally I don’t go crazy with pictures like this but I know that everyone is just really hyped to see these guys tossing.

Enjoy the pictures…  Especially those ones of Cliff because he sure does look happy…. but probably not as happy as us!

OH! I almost forgot… Not that you would have thought anything different, but Roy Halladay will be our Opening Day starter.

Happy New Year!

31 Dec

4headed.jpgI’m thinking this is gonna be a pretty good year! Happy 2011 Phanatic Addicts!

Go Phillies!

Done Deal – Phillies Ink Cliff Lee

15 Dec

4headed.jpgWhatever dumb nickname you want to give them the best rotation in baseball just got better….

Pen has met paper, and the Phillies have righted the wrong.  Cliff Lee is officially a member of the Phillies.  Cliff Lee signed a five-year, $120 million
contract with the Phillies, Senior Vice President & General Manager
Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. Lee’s contract has a vesting option
for 2016 and includes an awards package.

There will be a press conference at 3 P.M. today that can be seen on Phillies.com and likely seen on Comcast Sportsnet, and heard on 610 WIP Philadelphia.

Side Notes –

Joe Blanton – It’s pretty likely that the Phillies will begin to shop Joe Blanton to other teams.  It was rumored yesterday that he had been linked to Boston, but since Boston has 5 starters it’s likely that rumor was indeed just a rumor.  The Phillies have control of Joe, and can do whatever they like.  It’s pretty possible that they will bring him to spring training with them and as other teams needs become more prevalent his value may grow, but time will tell.

Cliff Notes

14 Dec

lele.jpgAre you guys having a good day today, or what? A few people have asked me some questions that I thought all you Phanatics might want to hear the answers to.

Q. When will he be introduced as a Phillie?

A.
He needs to come here and have a physical.  After he passes, which he
will, he’ll sign the contract and get introduced.  That will possibly be
Wednesday, or more likely Thursday.  I’m excited to see what he and
Ruben say at that press conference.

Q. What number will he wear?

A. Cliff will wear #33 (Thanks Barb). Halladay already
has 34 which is Lee’s old number.  I’m sure Lee didn’t want to step on
any toes.

Q. When will his Jersey be for sale?

A. Ha!  The
second after he puts pen to paper I’m sure you’ll be able to pre-order
that baby right in time for Christmas from Phillies.com.  I’ll be at
Modells this weekend for my Tee.

Q. Who is the #1 on this team now?

A. Oh, come on… It’s still Halladay.
