Catching Up

8 May

I’m really becoming torn with this team.  Are we coming out of the fog, or do we still stink?  It’s so hard to tell.  We have a game like Sunday night where we end up running over the  first place Nationals, and then come Monday where we return to our battle to drive in runners in scoring position.  All I can say about that is, Poor Roy.

The Phillies had a strange weekend in D.C. where they really won two games, but only came away with one, thanks to Joe West and his upset tummy.  I’m sorry, but Major League Baseball needs to have some alternates available at a moments notice, because three obviously can’t get it done.  However, there is nothing we can do about that but forget it, and move on.

Then we have this whole hullabaloo with Cole Hamels hitting Bryce Harper in the back.   I’m a huge fan of Hamels, but how are you dumb enough to go and say that you did it on purpose?  Avoid the question, or lie.  Just keep it to yourself.  As for Mike Rizzo, and all the stuff he said about Hamels, whatever… Let the players work it out on the field.  Nobody cares what the GM thinks.  Surprisingly this is the topic to which I have the least to say.  I don’t think it’s as big of a deal as people say.  If anything Hamels helped the Nats efforts to sell some more tickets, and create a rivalry.  I can’t wait for the next series with the Nats (May 21-23).  Mark your calendar, because this rivalry is just getting started.

I don’t know who the fans were that taunted Jayson Werth when he broke his wrist, but thanks for being so classless.  Let other cities hate us because our team is good, we don’t need them to hate us because we cheer for a guy getting injured.  Especially one that helped our city win its first championship in 28 years.  I don’t get how some people can be so stupid.  It’s totally cool to go and cheer your team in someone else’s house, but have some respect for the other people there, and the team.  I couldn’t believe how some of the people around me were acting.  Yes, I’m talking about you, Guy sitting next to me, who was throwing his trash in the flower boxes in left field.  You and your drunk friend that had to go to the bathroom every half inning are the reason that people thing Philly fans are jerks.  Nobody appreciated you, and your foul mouths.  Especially the guy with his kids sitting right next to you.  This was the first time that I think that I was actually embarrassed to be a Phillies fan.  It made me really sad.  I thought all the Nationals fans I encountered were really great, and I had a fun time, despite the loss.

Anyways…

I’m not writing as much these days because things in life are hectic, and I’m trying to enjoy some time being a fan (although the Phils are making it tough).  Not to mention that I’m spending a lot more time at the park, and I’ve gone on the road with the team twice already which is fun, but tiresome.  Thanks as always for checking in, and continuing to read my blog.  I’ll be trying harder over the next week or so to get back in gear.

Tomorrow let’s get back to talking about actual games, and hopefully a “W.”   Enough with the antics.

Missing J-Dub?

21 Jun

There has been plenty of chatter this season about adding a right handed bat to the lineup so just for fun I thought that I’d update you on the progress of our bearded buddy in D.C.

It hasn’t been an easy road for Jayson since he’s gone to the Nats. You could say that he’s gone south in more then one way.

Jayson is batting .232 with 10 homers, 27 RBI and a .742 OPS. He’s riding a .332 on base percentage. He appears statistically be headed towards an a career low in just about every statistical category.

He doesn’t play the same position, but let’s compare him to Raul Ibanez who has been disappointing us pretty much all season. Raul is batting .243 with 8 homers, 32 RBI and a .292 OBP. He’s got a .693 OPS.

Sure Raul has a little more going for him with the RBI’s because of a slightly more productive lineup in front of him, but it would be hard to argue that Werth is having much of a better season then Ibanez who has been struggling.

In the long run Werth is going to produce, and Ibanez is coming closer to the end of the career.

The Phillies don’t have a lot of options when it comes to making a trade for another bat becuase they have basically pocket change to work with when it comes to money. I’llexamine a few of their options later this week.

Phils Can’t Contain Werth

13 Apr

werth412.jpg

If you’ve been poking at your J-Dub voodoo doll this season, it was
working up until last night.  Jayson had been hitting right on the
Mendoza line, and before last night was hitting an abysmal 7 for 42 with
one RBI and seven strikeouts.  Ouch.

Last night was the breakout game he’d been looking for.  Werth went
2-3, with a home run, a double, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
Despite the boo birds that found their way to the seats in right field,
Werth had a stellar night.

You Hate The Phillies?

28 Feb

werth2.jpgCould Jayson Werth possibly be more detached? By now I think it’s safe
to assume that you’ve heard his comment where he proclaimed to Nationals
GM Mike Rizzo that he “hates” the Phillies.

Dude, what gives Jayson? You left this city a hero and somehow managed,
before even taking your first professional AB with your new team, to
make yourself public enemy number 1.

Now, more then just looking stupid, you’re playing the part.

Don’t forget where you came from. Pat Gillick pulled you off the
unemployment line and gave you a shot, and eventually the opportunity to
wear a World Series ring. Now you’re $125 million dollars richer even
though your probably not even worth half of that.

I’m not saying your a bad player, I’m just saying you’re an idiot. Get bent  Jayson.

What will Jayson do?

I don’t know, but I do know that the Phillies announced that they will be raising the prices of tickets between $2 and $5 and I hope that that means that they will be expanding their budget.  I don’t want to go on and on with this one, but the Phillies owners are a couple of billionaires that are running this team on a pretty low budget for how much money they have made in the last 4 years.  I don’t want to pay Jayson Werth the money that he’s looking for, but I do want his bat to stay in our line up, so I think that they need to do what they can to keep him, and the fans happy.

Jayson becomes a free agent tonight at midnight.

J-Dub Huge in Game 5

22 Oct
jDUB.jpg

I’ve been so on again, off again with Jayson Werth this season, but who hasn’t been?  At the traded deadline everyone was screaming for Domonic Brown to replace Jayson Werth because he was slumping so badly.  Like the rest of the Phillies he had a rather turbulent season.

Jayson had two of the biggest plays of the night on Thursday.  His home run in the top of the 9th was just the cushion that Brad Lidge needed to come out and pitch a comfortable inning.   It was the only homer hit in the three games at At&T Park.  But Jayson’s outfield assist in the bottom of the 4th was probably my favorite play.

Cody Ross had just doubled home Pat Burell when Pablo Sandoval drove one to right.  Werth settled underneath it and threw a frozen rope all the way to Polly to tag out Ross who mistakenly thought he could beat out the cannon that is Jayson Werth.  Being the

codyout.jpg

third out at third base is one of the biggest no-no’s in the game.  It was pretty stupid to try and advance there because he was already in scoring position.  I was just glad to see Cody Ross screw up.

Werth is going to be due a hefty paycheck after the season is over, and I still am on the fence whether I want the Phillies to be the one writing the check.  This helped.

Sorry Atlanta, It’s Not Gonna Happen

20 Sep

Jayson Werth questioned the fans that left Sunday’s game early.

“It seemed like some people left there,” Werth said. “I don’t know why you’re leaving.”

Then he made them look stupid.

Jayson and the Phillies waited until the bottom of the ninth to pull this one out.  Trailing 6-3 in the ninth the Phillies sent 4 batters to the plate who all collected hits off of Nationals closer Drew Storen, each hit bigger then the next.  Werth’s at bat was a battle, and after the eighth pitch he won.  Jayson’s hit sailed over the 409 sign in center field and sent the crowd into hysterics.  People all over the Delaware Valley threw their fists into the air as Jayson rounded first.  The walk off homer sealed the weekend sweep of the Nationals.

The Braves probably thought they had gained a game on the Phillies after they completed their sweep of the Mets just a few minutes earlier.

“I’m sure those guys were probably on their way down here thinking we’re
going to be back two games and amped up,” Howard said. “it definitely takes a hit when something like that happens.”

This team is just far too resilient to let their lead slip away.  The Phillies have won 9 of their last 10 and are sending the Big Three to the mound in their next series versus Atlanta.  It will be their biggest test of the season.

Two Games-Three Ejections-Two Losses Part I

25 Aug

_aug241.jpgMonday’s game against the Huston Astros was a little easier to take then Tuesday, but there were a few moments that made the loss so painful.  The run support is becoming far and few again.  How is it that the most potent offense in the Majors can have such collective dry spells?

Well it wouldn’t hurt if they weren’t all swinging for the fences.  How many fly outs have I seen in the last few nights?  A LOT!

The return of Brett Myers.  I don’t really care too much about this.  As a player I liked what Myers did at times.  I won’t forget him closing out the season on the last day in 2007 to win the division, or his famous at-bat against C.C. Sabathia in the 2008 NLDS that lead to Victorino’s grand slam.  Other then all that I just remember when he was arrested for punching his wife.  He’s a scumbag that is of course having a career year AFTER he leaves Philly.  He’s finally using his other pitches instead of trying to blow everybody away.

myers.JPGI had read some stories about what Jayson Werth said helped cause his base running blunder on Monday, then I saw the video.  Werth had claimed that Brett Myers stuck his tongue out ala Gene Simmons from KISS.  I thought that this was total crap, but then saw the video.  As you saw Werth was thrown out while an intentional walk was being thrown.  Werth and Myers exchanged some text messages with Brett and thanked him for distracting him.  Really funny guys, but Werth has one job out there, and it’s to stay in the game!  Sure when I saw the shot of Myers wiggling his tongue it was pretty funny, but there is nothing funny about losing to the stinking Astros.

Charlie Manual gets ejected for arguing a call that he had once argued with the same umpire before, only he was on different sides each time but lost both arguments.  Both lead to ejections.  This “Establishing a baseline” thing it dumb.  If you go out too far you should just be out.  It’s just like racing to the bag, if they beat you there, you’re out.  Although Howard claims he tagged Michael Bourn, it was really hard to tell.  This stupid play lead to the winning run for the Astros.  I’m not a total fan of instant replay or anything like that, but I think firming up some of these rules would be great.  Victorino said enough by not commenting on this one.

Phils lose to Myers and a bunch of chumps.

Alrighty… I gotta run.  Part II later tonight.

Never Count Them Out!

13 Aug

Thumbnail image for _aug121.jpgNo Howard, No Utley.  Down by 7 with two innings to go and they pulled it out. I’m sure there’s many disappointed fans that left their seats at the Bank, and headed for 1-95.  If you’re a fan of this team you should know that you should never give up on this team!  Stay in that seat and stick by the TV until the end.

Things just don’t seem to go right for Jonathan Broxton when he’s here at Citizens Bank Park.  Although he did close the game, that’s for sure.

The thing is, we’ve seen this before.  Game 4 of the NLCS last year Jimmy Rollins smashed a walk off single to right-center off Jonathan Broxton, and who can forget Matt Stairs’ colossal homer from the 2008 NLCS.  That thing is probably still floating up in the atmosphere somewhere.  Last night the 2010 Phillies decided to tag Broxton for 4 more runs and another walk off win.

It was another improbable win last night at Citizens Bank Park.  Losing 9-2 in the bottom of the 8th the Phillies decided stage a little comeback.  Carlos Ruiz did provide the game winning hit, but all the guys in front of him did a great job getting on base.  Polanco got plunked, then Sweeney and Werth walked.  Ben Francisco followed them and smashed a ball right through the legs of Casey Blake scoring the first two. Then as you all know Chooch took care of the rest in walk off fashion.

Yeah, the starting pitching really wasn’t that great on Thursday night. Neither was the work from the bullpen, but I don’t really feel like talking about that today.  I’m trying not to ruin the buzz I’m still feeling from the win.

Thumbnail image for _aug122.jpgThere’s something about those red pinstripes that instills confidence in these guys.  They don’t ever think they’re going to lose and there isn’t really ever panic in the dugout.  I don’t want to say that I think this is a team of destiny, but if there was one, I think these guys would have to be it.  All I know is that when they come out of that clubhouse everyday they it set in their minds that they’re going to win. That’s a team I’m proud to follow.

Side Notes –

Shane – Victorino returned to the team last night at CBP. In his first appearance in his return Shane earned a walk and stole a base.  It’s a very good thing to see as the boys in red prepare to make a run at the post-season.

Oswalt Trade – A Deeper Look

30 Jul

roy_oswalt--300x300.jpg

Alright, let’s first answer some questions about Roy Oswalt from the doubters.

Q. Is Roy really healthy?  I hear he has some back problems, and that worries me.

A. The Phillies feel pretty certain that Roy is healthy.  He has had some issues with his back and has received some cortisone injections, but the Phillies are pretty confident this won’t be another Freddy Garcia.

Q. How can they afford a guy like this when they couldn’t afford a guy like Cliff Lee?  Cliff was the man!

A. Yeah, Cliff was the man.  He kinda still is.  Just wait until he gets his big contract this off season.  Then you’ll see why we couldn’t afford him.  The Phillies made the decision not to keep Cliff Lee because they wanted a pitcher that they could keep for more then just 2010.  When Roy Halladay accepted a deal to stay here for a this duration Lee had to go.  Yeah he would have been inexpensive to hold onto this year, but the Phillies needed that money in case something bad happened and they had to go out and spend.  With Roy Oswalt the Phillies also received a reported $11 Million dollars.  That will help offset some of the remainder of Oswalt’s salary this
season (about $5 million) and next ($16 million).  It was a pretty good deal that they got.  But yes, there were risks.

Q. I was a big Happ fan, and I think it sucks we gave him away!

A. Well, we didn’t really just give him away.  We got one of the toughest pitchers in baseball.  Charlie Manuel said that whenever Oswalt faced the Phillies in the past our hitters would talk about how tough he was to hit.  J.A. Happ was, like Oswalt will be, a risk.  He has spent the majority of this season on the D.L. and nobody was sure he should have been called back up as quickly as he was.  J.A. was a great guy and I hope he does well, but I think that the 1,2,3 punch of Halladay, Hamels, and Oswalt was just too hard for the Phillies to resist.  If Joe Blanton can maintain or improve on his season things are looking up for the starting staff.

Q. What are the chances now of getting back to the World Series?  I’m gonna order my tickets today!

A.  It’s OK to be a confident fan, but cocky fans aren’t cool. Things are looking up, but there are still quite a few games to win.  The N.L. is surely better this year.  One game at a time.  One exciting point I do want to make though is that Roy Oswalt has never lost a game he started at Citizens Bank Park. Nice.

Q. Do you think we traded away the “Future”?

A. No.  You have to remember that prospects are what they are, prospects.  Most of the guys in Single A have less then a 10% chance to make it to the bigs.  I’m not saying that I think we gave away a bunch of stiffs, I just think it’s worth it to take a proven commodity over a couple of lottery tickets that can’t be scratched in until 2014.

OK, so yes the money.  This is a good deal.  The Phillies will only need to pay Roy Oswalt about $10 million over this year and next.  The one sore note there is that it will pretty much end the Jayson Werth era.  I don’t see how it would be possible for the Phillies to keep Jayson Werth with how much money it would cost.  Not to mention that Domonic Brown is waiting in the wings.  With Oswalt the Phillies as an organization see a guy that can help get them into the post season this year and next.

Roy Oswalt for the first time in his 14 year career will be starting for a team that’s not the Houston Astros organization. Tonight at 7:05 the Phillies will take the field behind Roy Oswalt and seek out their ninth straight win.
