With every start he makes Roy Halladay appears to look just a little more locked in. It may have only been April 13th, but Roy looked like the Roy of last September.

14 AprAces Issue of SI Out Now!
4 Apr
Well, I feel like an idiot now that I know that the newest issue of Sports Illustrated only came out today. I must have went to about six or seven stores over the weekend looking for this thing.
Author Gary Smith gives the five pitchers nicknames which he uses over and over when he refers to the pitchers which will have you continually flipping back to the title page to refresh your memory on who is who. It’s kinda annoying, but fun at the same time.
It’s a pretty good article, but it still bothers me how much of a snub Joe Blanton gets from the media. Smith calls Blanton “The Sidekick - The mere mortal among the five, bolstered by his superfriends.” I’m sure he loved reading that.
It’s a pretty good read, make sure you check it out.
I’ve made a few changes to the blog today, and have a few more in the works. Check back a bit over the next few days so you can see what I’ve got cooking.

Day 2 in Clearwater
14 Feb
Alrighty, so let’s get to the highlights of the second day of Spring
Training in Clearwater. By now I’m sure you know that the pitchers had a
group press conference at Brighthouse Field to get all the rest of the stupid questions out of the way so they can get down to business.
You would have thought that the reporters throwing out the questions might have come up with some slightly more interesting questions, but we got a whole lot more of the “Cliff what made you choose Philly?” stuff. The guy that asked about the cheese steaks? Dumb. Cliff gave a real answer after that. “I felt like this was the best chance to win world championships. That’s what it’s all about,” Lee said.
What bothers me is all this R2C2, Phantastic Phour stuff. Was the media so star stuck that they just went stupid? I’m as psyched about this starting rotation as you are, but don’t forget about Joe Blanton like this one reporter did….
“Cole, you are the only one at this table with a ring….” interrupting Cole says “He’s got one too” Looking down at Joe. Big Joe’s immediate response was “It’s okay, I know you always
forget about me.”
Ouch! Poor Joe. I haven’t forgotten you Joe. I still remember jumping around like a crazy person in the stands when you hit that homer in game 3 of the 2008 World Series. I was happy that Cliff, who really seemed to be fielding all the questions, said that they don’t care about all the dumb nicknames that they are focusing on the job ahead of them.
For the most part the guys all seemed to be enjoying themselves. I think what’s best to take away from this is that they appear to mean business. Let’s remember that they may appear to be one of the greatest rotations of all time, but they haven’t hit the field yet. They know that they are something special, but they know that they need to go out there every night and prove.
Oh yeah, and they worked out! No toeing the rubber just yet, but it was a much less leisurely day then yesterday.
Alright, bedtime…

Day 1 in Clearwater (With Pictures!)

I scoured the internet and pulled together a bunch of pictures just for you. Loving the smiles on Cliff Lee’s face, and really loving the one of Ryan Madson
in the Lidge t-shirt. the pitchers were not supposed to throw today
but apparently they were just so excited to get started that a few games
of catch took place before lunch.
Kinda looks to me like Joe Blanton
has lost a little weight. Hopefully all this talk of the Four Aces
hasn’t brought depression and anorexia. Seriously though, it’s nice to
see him showing up looking more fit. There is a little bit of news
regarding Joe. Rich Dubee told the media today that there isn’t
going to be a competition for the fifth starters spot. The job is Joe
Blantons.
So what does that news mean to the rest of the pitchers? This means that Kyle Kendrick is a sure thing for the
bullpen. Dubee also said that as exciting as the Phillies starting
rotation is not to get too caught up in all the hype because the Phils
need to play 162 games.
While we’re on the subject of the bullpen let’s say a few words about Chad Durbin. I barked at a fellow blogger to day John Shields from The State of the Phillies because I know he’s sad that Chad wasn’t resigned. Hopefully he’s still speaking to me…. But let’s be honest. There are a bunch of arms that need to be tested in our farm system. We can’t keep this team young, and frankly we can’t afford to keep resigning all these players. Give Justin De Fratus, Scott Mathison, and the boys a chance to impress.
Ruben Amaro Jr. told the media that Antonio Bastardo is a little bit behind because he suffered a minor injury while playing in the Dominican Winter Leagues.
Normally I don’t go crazy with pictures like this but I know that everyone is just really hyped to see these guys tossing.

Enjoy the pictures… Especially those ones of Cliff because he sure does look happy…. but probably not as happy as us!
OH! I almost forgot… Not that you would have thought anything different, but Roy Halladay will be our Opening Day starter.

Just Another Reason to Love Roy Halladay
24 Jan
If you live in the Philadelphia area you know how cold it is outside. Probably a little to cold to be wearing shorts, don’t you think? Not if you’re Roy Halladay. Roy was spotted working out in the outfield of Citizens Bank Park this afternoon. Is he crazy? Well yes, but I think dedicated is probably a better way to look at it. Somebody get this guy some sweatpants! You’re the man Roy!
We’re just three weeks away from the start of Spring Training in Clearwater.

So, about this season….
21 Jan
So I’m as excited as anyone for this season to get started. I’ve been talking so much about the Phillies at home that I think my wife is reconsidering our nuptials. Everyone, knowing how much of a Phillies nut I am, wants to tell me how pumped they are for the start of Spring Training and ask me what I think the teams chances are of going all the way. That’s great, and I love the spirit and enthusiasm, but I just want to say something about it.
Don’t look beyond the regular season. Let it all play out. This is going to be a magical season in Philadelphia and I’m afraid that everyone is looking past the regular season and focusing primarily on October. Starting in April you’re going to have something fun to do every night. Four nights out of the week you’re going to be able to flip on the TV set at 7:05, and see one of the best pitchers in baseball throwing downhill in red pinstripes.
There are 162 games to be enjoyed before we get there, so enjoy every minute of it.

This Year in Baseball Awards 2010
17 NovHey gang, let’s show the Phillies a little support in the 2010 This Year in Baseball Awards. The 2010 This Year in Baseball Awards is voted on by you, the fans. Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, Chooch and Charlie Manuel are all there for your voting. Make sure to click over there and throw them some support. Halladay is nominated in a bunch of categories.
I know that I have mentioned Todd Zolecki before and I’m sure that if you read my blog then you no doubtingly know who he is. Todd is the go-to guy for the inside scoop on the Phillies. His blog The Zo Zone is the best one out there when it comes to the Phils. He’s also got a new Facebook Page where you can get all the latest updates on the Phillies. Todd usually knows everything that is happening with them first. Check him out.
The weather was good today. My wife and I hung by the pool and walked on the beach for a bit. I watched my little haggler work her magic with all the street vendors. She managed to get some jewelry by trading the free soda from our hotel room. It was pretty funny,

Weekly Winter Tidbits Vol 1.
16 NovIt was no surprise to anyone today that Roy Halladay won the National League Cy Young Award. Roy won in a unanimous decision getting a first place vote from everyone on the panel. Halladay is now one just five pitchers to win the title in the National, and American Leagues in baseball history, and just the 16th multiple winner. His season was utterly spectacular despite falling short of a World Series berth.
Roy Halladay became just the 20th pitcher in baseball history to throw a
perfect game, when he threw one May 29 against the Florida Marlins, and just the second pitcher in baseball history to
throw a no-hitter in the postseason, when he threw one Oct. 6 against
the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the NL Division Series at Citizens Bank
Park.
His triumph in the NLDS is now being looked at as the greatest accomplishment by any Philadelphia sports athlete anywhere, in any sport, and I’d be interested to know if anyone can think of a better one.
A few rumors this week were popping up on the web that the Phillies are making a “Big push” to keep right fielder Jayson Werth. SI’s John Heyman said the a source close to the Phillies had told him that the Phillies are making a strong effort to keep the Bearded Wonder, and that the Phillies want Werth’s answer soon. I fell for this one soon, but am now starting to doubt this story. Part of me wants to think that the Phillies are trying to look like they made a big effort for the slugger, but don’t really have the intention to bring him back. I think that they just want to make the fans think they tried. Nothing is really going to happen with Werth until after the Winter Meetings, and I think it’s a bit strange that the Phillies are saying this now.
Kudos to the Phillies for retaining Jose Contreras. 2 years for $5.5 million is a pretty nice deal. Contreras is a bit old at 38 but he was very useful throughout the season. Good get Ruben.
