Phils Take Two of Three From Nats

3 Aug

It wasn’t a sweep, but it sure did feel great to take two of three from Nationals in DC.  Especially after a brutal series against the Braves, and then saying good bye to Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence.

The Phillies touched up Stephen Strasburg on Tuesday, and prevailed in a tight game on Wednesday courtesy of Jimmy Rollins and the long-ball.

Thursday night was a different story as Ross Detwiler out dueled Cole Hamels for a 3-0 victory.

The Nationals are the best team in the NL East, and pose to be the biggest threat to hold onto that distinction.

The Nats are far younger then the Phillies and going into next season will have money to spend.  It’s already been speculated that the Nationals plan on taking a run at signing Michael Bourn.  Bourn is a client of Scott Boras who represents multiple players in the Nationals organization.

… And something tells me the Phillies want Bourn back.

The Phillies aren’t done by any means.  2012 might be the lost year for the Fightin’ Phils, but they’ll have money to spend for 2013, and expect them to do it. Signing Cole Hamels is a big sign of their commitment to winning, and to their fans.

Charlie Manual lamented that thought when asked about the sell-out streak.

“I hope they stay with us,” he said. “We have good players. We have good pitchers. The sellout streak is something we want to keep intact. We’re trying to win as many games as we can.”

He went further.

“I think people will still come see us,” Manuel said. “I hope they do. We’re going to keep trying to improve this team. Talking to our front office, we definitely want to keep a quality team so the fans will have something to be excited about. But for now we have to win some games. We have to show them we can win some games.”

Jayson Werth still thinks the Phillies can be a force.

“I’m not convinced it’s over for them,” Werth said. “They’re still going to be a pretty good team as the years go on here. Unfortunately, I guess more fortunately for us, it’s been our year this year.”

After vowing to make sure there is never a parade in Philadelphia again, Werth still thinks it’s a possibility, and so should you.

I was listening to the radio prior to last night’s game and Nats manager had a mouthful to say about the Phillies– none of it flattering. I’m glad to hear Werth saying something positive though. I’m going to tomorrow night’s game with my sons to celebrate my Birthday. Loyal Phillies fans will show up for games. I guarantee that.

Yeah, I heard he said that he enjoyed watching the Phillies have to sell off Pence and Shane. Pffff.

      It’s just a stunt.
